Klonopin is a benzodiazepine medication. Klonopin can make you tired or dizzy and may impede your thinking and motor abilities. This will get better over time. Don't drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform other dangerous activities until you know exactly how Klonopin affects you. Klonopin can cause issues with your own coordination, particularly when you're walking or picking up things. Don't drink alcohol or take other medications which may make you tired or dizzy while taking Klonopin till you speak with your physician. When taken with alcohol or drugs that cause sleepiness or dizziness, Klonopin can create your sleepiness or dizziness worse.
Who shouldn't take Klonopin?
Don't take Klonopin for those who:
The sudden withdrawal of Klonopin, especially in these patients on longterm, high-dose treatment, can precipitate status epilepticus. Thus, when quitting Klonopin, gradual withdrawal is essential. While Klonopin is being gradually removed, the simultaneous substitution of another anticonvulsant may be indicated.
Klonopin may create an increase in salivation. This should be considered before giving the medication to patients that have difficulty handling secretions. Klonopin can cause respiratory depression and should be used with care in patients with compromised respiratory function (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, sleep apnea). Klonopin might have a porphyrogenic effect and must be used with caution in patients with porphyria.
